There are three basic tanker designs – baffles, bulkheads and smoothbores; all of which determine how liquid cargo moves when the truck is in motion.
Bulkhead
The semi tanker trailer with bulkhead design has strong bulkheads to form different isolated storage compartments inside the fuel semi trailer. The bulkhead design effectively controls the fore and aft motion of the tank; however, it does not accurately account for the sideways motion that puts the tanker at risk of tipping over. To ensure greater stability, the front or rear compartments of the tanker are overloaded so that the cargo is distributed as evenly as possible during the loading and unloading activities.
Baffle
Baffles are designed like bulkheads and consist of perforated sloping dividers that effectively slow the flow of cargo from front to rear. While baffles are effective in front-to-back flow control, they don't account for side-to-side movement like bulkheads do.
Smoothbore
For the smoothbore design, there is no division in the tanker. Instead, it has a long, sleek look. Tankers have a smoothbore design for several reasons; however, when they are partially full, there is a very high risk of sloshing, which could change the direction of the tanker. For example, a sudden change in speed can cause the cargo to hit the trailer wall and possibly cause the vehicle to skid. Regardless of this issue, semi tanker trailers with a smoothbore design generally offer higher capacities.
